Please read this section before attending your first meeting, it will give you an idea of what you can expect.
What goes on at each Toastmasters meeting?
Toastmasters is about more than just public speaking. It is also about leadership and becoming
more effective at running meetings. Toastmaster meetings have structure and always have an
agenda.
Each meeting follows a set format, although occasionally the meeting may differ slightly for
educational sessions, contests or club business components.
Each meeting has two main components
- Prepared speeches, which generally run from five to seven minutes
- Table topics (impromptu speaking), which run from one to two minutes
Table topics are extemporaneous and prepared speeches are scheduled ahead of time. To help
speakers improve their abilities, each prepared speech speaker is assigned an evaluator who will
provide both constructive oral and written evaluations. To encourage and acknowledge members’
achievements, everyone votes on the best prepared speech speaker, table topics speaker and
evaluator.
As a guest, you are encouraged to, but not required to, participate in the regular meeting.
Please join us for two or three meetings and get a feel for how the meetings are run and
the benefits to be gained by the development of public speaking skills.
Please refer to the meeting agenda to review the details of tonight’s meeting. If you have any
questions, please ask any members
